Contemporary dance masterclass

We were delighted to welcome Olivia Roach to lead a contemporary dance masterclass with our Majors students...

Olivia is a professional dancer; she trained at The Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London. She has participated in both ballet and contemporary performances while training at Rambert including the RAD Genée International Ballet Competition in both New Zealand and Scotland. Olivia has been dancing with Richard Chappell Dance since 2013, performing in 'Unto the Ground' (2013), 'IRIS' (2014) and 'The Vast Rocks' (2015). More recently, Olivia has begun teaching masterclasses in ballet and contemporary dance across the UK.

Unique workshop opportunity

Twenty-four of our Majors students joined the workshop which, for many of them, was their first experience of contemporary dance. They had 75 minute technique class, followed by two hour long sessions working on two different contemporary dance pieces choreographed by Olivia. The last part of the session introduced them to relaxation and improvisation, and ended with a chance to perform the pieces in small groups.

Olivia picked out three dancers who she thought had excelled during the performances to perform again together at the end. Well done to Robyn Whyte (12), Serena McCall (12) and Zoe Young (13)!

Many thanks to Olivia for this wonderful experience!
