Project Dance Summer School 2018

Our 2018 Project Dance Summer School brought 63 young dancers together from across Scotland for 4 intensive days of dance training.

It was also lovely to have another 4 former CSBS students drop in for classes throughout course, and also welcome 7 students from other dance schools for the course.

The 4-day course was open to all dance students studying Grade 2-Advanced levels and included a packed timetable of 6 classes each day including: warm-up, ballet, repertoire, jazz, commercial, contemporary and musical theatre. There is a fabulous record of each day  on our CSBS Facebook page - PLEASE go and have a look through each gallery of photos.

Learning from the best...

We were again very fortunate to have an amazing team of guest tutors as our faculty:

  • Sara-Maria Barton (Ballet and Repertoire) : Genée International Ballet Competition medallist, Sara-Maria, has had contracts with all of the major British ballet companies. She both trained and is now Creative Director at Ballet West.
  • Kelly Marie Shields (Ballet and Repertoire) : Kelly trained and performed with Ballet West and was also a Geneé International Ballet Competition finallist. She now teaches at various schools across Scotland.
  • Caitlin Forret (Jazz): Caitlin is studying for her performance degree at the MGA Academy of Performing Arts. She has vast experience in musical theatre and dance, and is in demand as a choreographer.
  • Demz Crawley (Commercial) : Demz is a professional dancer and has performed across the world on stage and screen. Her workshops are in demand across the world as a leading name in commercial dance.
  • Claire McAlister (warm up) : A former CSBS student, Claire is the coach for our Starshine Cheer and Dance teams, and head of dance at Larbert High School of Dance.
  • Katie Hunter (warm up): Katie is a specialist dance teacher at Larbert High and has won awards for choreography. She taught alongside Claire on the course.
  • Martin Fenton (Contemporary) : Martin is a former gymnast but then trained in dance in Glasgow, London and Broadway. He has performed across the world on stage and screen.

On the final day of the course, parents were invited to watch an informal presentation of work showcasing just a little of what the students had been learning. The course was mainly focussed on technique and mastering new steps but the students also had a number of short routines to share.

Certificates and awards

Every student was presented with a certificate on completion of the course and a souvenir t-shirt. Two 'Star Performer' awards were also presented to each group. The faculty chose 2 students who they thought had shown just a little extra hard work, determination, enthusiasm and talent over the course. They had an almost impossible task; all the participants had worked hard and progressed so much in each class... they wanted to award one to everyone! The awards were presented to:

  • Group 1 Star Performers - Marilena Lalou and Ellie Withnell
  • Group 2 Star Performers - Hannah Firth and Rachel Schreuder
  • Group 3 Star Performers - Eve Hanson and Ailish Ogilvie
  • Group 4 Star Performers - Katy Russell and Sarah Leslie

Many thanks to the Community Access staff at Grangemouth High School, and also to CSBS teachers Amanda and Sammy who managed the entire event. If you or your child took part, please complete our Project Dance 2018 feedback survey!
