Big Dance Edinburgh

BIG Dance took over Edinburgh city centre for a whole weekend with over 100 performances from local dance schools and groups, tasters, flashmobs, massive tea dance and a professional casting...

The 'Big Dance 2012' is the UK's biggest ever celebration of dance with events taking part around the UK in the Olympic year. As part of the Scottish Government's policy to Get Scotland Dancing, Dance Base received investment from Creative Scotland to produce a celebration of dance - bringing dance to the people and people to dance. There were a huge range of performances and workshops by amateur and professional groups, from break dancing to ballet, aerial acrobatics to African and cheerleading to charleston, as well as a world record breaking Tea Dance and dance-along-movie 'Dirty Dancing'!

Performing in Edinburgh

We were delighted to be a part of this exciting National event and performed on stage in the Grassmarket in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. Our students performed a short showcase of jazz, ballet and tap, with all ages and abilities taking part. Lucy Hutton and Alix Cooper performed their Genee Dance Challenge ballet solos and Rosie Walker performed a tap solo she had choreographed herself.

The showcase was followed by a fantastic performance by our Majors students of their ballet adaptation of "Beauty and the Beast". There was a large crowd watching - even though we were the first performers of the day, which included family, friends, tourists and other dancers, and everyone really enjoyed the experience.

The students and their friends then spent the rest of their day watching performances, taking part in a range of workshops, and shopping!

You can view a full gallery of photos on our Facebook page or watch some videos of the performances on our YouTube channel. Enjoy!
