Local Hero Awards

Cheer coach Claire Smith, was a finalist in the Central FM Local Hero Awards 2011.

Claire (21) was nominated for the "Teacher/trainer of the year" category and was selected by judges, from hundreds of nominations, as a finalist. She was nominated for her determination and dedication throughout her diagnosis and treatment for cancer over the past year.

During her illness, she has resolutely attended rehearsals and also accompanied the team of Starshine cheerleaders to their first National competition. She has proved an inspiration to her young dancers.

Awards Ceremony

The formal ceremony and presentation was held at Airth Castle Hotel with entertainment by Gamu and Chesney Hawkes! Joining Claire at the Awards were CSBS Director, Amanda-Louise Clark and Starshine Team Captain, Kristina Lowe (pictured above with Claire).

During a very emotional and inspiring evening, Claire was placed as runner-up in her category. More photos of the event are in the Starshine Cheerleaders Facebook gallery.

We wish Claire all the best for a speedy recovery as her treatment continues.
